This was confirmed by Premier David Makhura on Friday when he unveiled the newly refurbished and renovated AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in the West Rand.

"The clouds are not gathering anymore, the storm is here. The Covid storm, the resurgence is here. Let's not debate the technicalities about how many more infections you need. The storm is here. Let's get to the communities that people must take care [of]."

As of Thursday night, Gauteng's active Covid-19 cases have increased to 6 712.

This means that the province is now leading with the most number of active cases.

Government's mass vaccination programme is set to begin on Monday.

The next phase of the county's vaccination programme will be targeting outstanding healthcare workers, the elderly and those who have underlying conditions.

"From Monday, we are vaccinating the elderly people. I am coming to monitor the administration of the vaccine of the elderly people on the West Rand," add Makhura.

Gauteng has received a first batch of 61 000 vaccines which will be given to the most vulnerable population.

More doses are expected to be delivered throughout the province as vaccination efforts gain momentum.
