M19 protest action over service delivery simmers down

Residents of an informal settlement situated along the M19 - who were protesting on Monday morning have called it quits.

They were addressed by eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda following service delivery issues. 


Hundreds of demonstrators from the uMkhudwini informal settlement closed off a kilometres-long stretch of road -- demanding that their electricity supply be restored.

eThekwini metro police's Parbhoo Sewparsad says the road's been reopened and police are monitoring the area. 


"The mayor arrived there and he addressed them. They went back into their shack. The mayor indicated to them that there will be a follow up meeting next Sunday. 


"The roadway is now open - both directions. The debris is pushed to the side of the roadway by our armoured vehicles. Nobody has been arrested.


Community activist, Ron Naidoo, says community leaders will meet with city officials this week.

"It has everything to do with reconnection of electricity for the settlement that burnt down in August last year. 


"They are happy with the fact that the mayor has told them that he will organise the officials to meet with them to explain everything to them and reconnections won't be connected today to tomorrow - it will take some time because we need to find the budget for it."
