Local leadership must unite in addressing political killings: Commission

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube- Ncube says the latest murder of the Umzimkhulu councillor shows that there is a need for all municipalities, to unite against the scourge of politically motivated killings in the province.

Thirty-nine-year-old Mduduzi Shibase was fatally shot outside his home in Gugwini in the Harry Gwala District, on Tuesday. 

He is the third government officials to be murdered in the area, since the beginning of the year. KZN Cogta spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela.

"Our MEC for Co-operative Governance and International Affairs, Nomusa Dube Ncube has sent her condolences to the family of the late councillor. She has also called on members of the community to work closely with police in ensuring that those responsible for this matter are apprehended urgently to ensure that we nip this scourge in the bud," he said. 

The Commission of Inquiry that was established to probe political killings in the province says it's working with police and political leaders to bring an end to the spate of murders.

The commission's Solomzi Mdledle says more stakeholders have to contribute towards finding a solution. 

"We're taking evidence from various witnesses. It's going to be an effort from everyone in the province. The answer will not lie with the Commission or the police alone. Political will have to come and try and [discuss] reasons and talk to each other," he said. 

KZN police say no arrests have been made.
