KwaZulu-Natal police say three gunmen entered their house in Welbedact East earlier this month and opened fire on the family.

Two-year-old Chazlynn died en route to hospital.

Her older brother, 14-year-old Ainzlee, passed away in hospital the next morning.

Their mother, Charlene Naicker, had been in ICU since the incident two Fridays ago.

She died on Monday morning.

Naicker has four other children. Three of them were at their grandmother's house nearby.

Her husband was in a different part of their home at the time of the shooting.

Odelle Moodley, who is engaged to Naicker's eldest son.

"Our eldest son and I, we were across the road and her mom as well, we all thought it was firework in the area and only for all of us to join together to find that we found them in a pool of blood, laying at their doorway. By the time it was too late.

"I think everyone was still in shock because just Saturday that passed, we've had to have the funeral of Chazlynn and Ainzlee. We are still grieving all of that and this morning to get the phone call that now aunty Charlene has passed away, its a lot for them to handle."

Moodley says Naicker died not knowing she'd lost the two children because the family was worried her condition would deteriorate.

She says they also had to sit the three surviving younger children down to break the news to them.

"We actually just came to them now and their brother sat them down and spoke to them. They are finding it so hard to expect and believe. It is not something that they want to expect because they are at the age of where they need mom and there is such disbelief."
