Labour zeros in on non-compliance at Durban CBD

The Employment and Labour Minister's furious after an inspection blitz at some foreign owned shops in Durban.

Minister Thulas Nxesi has issued a stern warning to Chinese nationals, saying their days of exploiting South African workers are numbered.  

Labour officials inspected the popular China Mall located on Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street, the old West Street, in the CBD yesterday.

During their visit, some shop owners made a run for it while others shut their doors.

Numerous businesses were singled out for non-compliance with labour regulations.  

Some workers are allegedly undocumented and unregistered and others claim they are forced to work every day, with only two weeks being granted for maternity leave.

The department's going to work on interventions to deal with this particular situation.  

One woman told Newswatch despite working so hard, they sometimes do not get paid.

"I sometimes work seven days a week. We don't get leave or time off, even during the holidays."
