#KZNFloods declared a provincial disaster

The National Disaster Management Centre has classified last week's devastating #KZNFloods as a provincial disaster.

The national Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says the declaration follows an assessment by the centre.

This means the province will receive funds from the national government so it can deal with the aftermath of the storm.

COGTA spokesperson Musa Zondi says an area is declared a disaster when the local authorities do not have sufficient funds to deal with the occurrence.

The department says the funds will be used to repair the massive damage to public and private infrastructure as well as health and educational facilities, roads and railway lines.

More than 70 people were killed when parts of the province were lashed by heavy downpours that caused severe flooding last week.

Homes caved in, roads were undermined and buildings damaged in the deluge.

The Independent Electoral Commission says plans are being made to ensure voting can take place next Wednesday in affected areas.
