Eskom says its teams are working flat out to restore power to communities in and around Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The utility says a windstorm blew through the area on Tuesday night and caused outages, affecting thousands of residents.

A conductor on a high-voltage line between the Impala and Nseleni substations was affected.
The strong winds also affected the Kwambonambi, Mtubatuba, Hluhluwe and Mkuze substations.
Eskom's Joyce Zingoni says although teams have been clearing the area, they need to work in thorny bushes, which have hampered efforts to restore supply to the affected communities.
"They are affecting about 75,000 customers. Our teams are hard at work, and power should be restored as soon as possible."
