Umngeni staff caught with illegal electricity connections
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
Fourteen Umngeni Municipality staff members are facing disciplinary action after they were caught with illegal electricity connections at their homes.
According to the municipality, the illegal connections were discovered during a staff verification process to ensure there were no ghost workers in the system.
Umngeni has subsequently decided to conduct an electricity audit on the homes of all staff and councillors.
Mayor Christopher Pappas says the town is losing four million rands every year due to electricity theft.
"Staff were disconnected, and disciplinary processes have started. In total, out of the 144 staff members that were found to be in areas with the municipality, 14 will face disciplinary action."
