KZN universities update: Arson, arrests, and confusion at campuses

Acts of arson at the UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus overnight have resulted in some students at that institution being turned away from lectures this morning.

The institution's Malherbe residence had to be evacuated last night, after a section of the building - including the TV lounge - were set alight.

The DSLT Council Chambers were also burned. Two students have since been arrested for arson.





UKZN management on Tuesday issued a statement notifying students and staff that the academic programme at all five campuses was continuing. It also cautioned students against continuing with protest action at the institution, which it deemed illegal.

Lectures have resumed without disruption at most UKZN campuses today, However, some students at the PMB campus will be affected by a disruption to lectures following last night's destruction to campus property.


Meanwhile at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), classes have commenced without interference - a day after hundreds of students marched from the Ritson Road campus to City Hall, for the right to free higher education.

The university has also issued a revised examination timetable for students, with exams scheduled to begin on October 24 - two weeks after the initial start date.


At the University of Zululand, there's still some contusion as to whether or not lectures are continuing. Some UniZulu students have taken to Twitter to report that their classes have been cancelled, while others have been allowed into lectures. 

In a communique issued to students on Facebook on Monday, management urged all students to return to campus.
