KZN schools adopt zero-tolerance approach to GBV

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence in schools.
Speaking at a media briefing in KwaMashu on the state of readiness for the 2020 academic year, MEC Kwazi Mshengu said they'd root out all forms of abuse.

He says any incidence of sexual assault against learners and teachers will be dealt with harshly and decisively.
"Girls under the age of 16 cannot consent to any sexual activity. So, teachers, who engage in sexual activities with learners they will be rooted out of the education system".

"Whether the learner is above the age of 16, as long as that person is a learner and the teachers have found to have engaged in any form of sexual activity even abuse, we are going to ensure that teacher has no space in the education system," he said.
