KZN receives another weather alert, severe thunderstorms expected

The South African Weather Service has issued another 'Watch' for strong winds and severe thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Gale force north easterly winds are expected between Port Edward on the south coast and Richards Bay on the north coast by this afternoon.

Forecasters say winds speeds of up to 65kmph can be expected.

Severe thunderstorms are then expected across most of the province tomorrow. The wind will also change to a strong south westerly by tomorrow evening, reaching 70kmph in some parts.

Forecaster Wisani Maluleke says similar conditions will likely persist until the end of the week.


Sea swells will reach 4.5 metres in Durban tomorrow. Swells of up to 5 metres can be expected in Port Shepstone in the morning.

Durbanites and Pietermaritzburg residents can expect a partly cloudy start to Tuesday, with a 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers in the evening.

Richards Bay gets off to a clear start in the morning, but also has a 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers by evening.

Similar conditions are expected at most stations.

Durban and the Drakensburg - 30
Margate - 29
Richards Bay and Mooi River - 32
Newcastle and Ulundi - 34
Ladysmith - 36
Kokstad - 31
Pietermaritzburg - 35

Temperatures will then drop across the province. Durban is only expected to reach 21 degrees on Wednesday -- there is also an 80 percent chance of morning showers across the province.
