2017 Year in Review: #DurbanStorm wreaks havoc along KZN coast

The 10th of October 2017 will be a date etched into the memories of many KwaZulu-Natal residents who were affected by the torrential rains and gale force winds that lashed the east coast.
Roads were severely flooded, especially the N2 in the vicinity of the old Durban International Airport, and homes destroyed or badly damaged.
Images and videos of destruction circulated on social media, as people quickly began to realise the magnitude of the storm.

Reports of vehicles floating on the N2 by the old airport or fully submerged under water quickly made their way to newsrooms across the country.

The deadly storm struck the KwaZulu-Natal south coast first, moving northwards along the coast.
The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says 36 people across the province died as a result of the storm.
324 schools were affected, while 9,720 homes were damaged.

Homes and businesses were also left without electricity. eThekwini said that around 1,700 faults had been logged with the municipality within about three days of the storm.
The Port of Durban was also closed and operations suspended.

Areas south of Durban were among the hardest hit, with Amanzimtoti, parts of the Bluff, Isipingo, Montclair and Umlazi, among others severely affected.
Train services across KwaZulu-Natal were suspended due to damaged infrastructure.
COGTA launched a disaster relief fun in November to facilitate donations from corporates and private individuals to bolster government's efforts in mitigating the effects of natural disasters.
