KZN premier reassures Pongola residents over road safety plans
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has reassured residents of Pongola that government is working to make their roads safer.
On Friday, she visited families of the 20 people who were killed in a crash between a truck and a bakkie on the N2 last month.
Eighteen of the victims were children.
The truck driver is facing charges of culpable homicide and is due back in court later this month.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has already promised to spend around R2.5 billion to expand the highway.

But Dube-Ncube says people need to get on board and stick to the rules of the road.
"I can say that up till now, for the month, the police have arrested more than 500 road users - the trucks. They have also removed more than 50 cars out of the road that were unroadworthy.
"And we've had a number of successes in terms of the arrests of those that have had their PDP expired, so there is a lot of work that is happening."
