Siyanda Khumalo heard his fate in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

The NPA's Natasha Kara says Khumalo was in a relationship with Vamisile Zenda, the mother of six-year-old Sandiso and 14-year-old Amkela.

Their relationship is said to have turned sour, with Zenda at some point taking out a protection order against Khumalo.

In his plea, Khumalo said the order had angered him.

He told the court it led him to want to hurt her by causing as much pain as possible.

"On the day of the incident, Khumalo went to Zenda's house to seek revenge, but found the boys alone and used a bush knife to strike Amkele on the back of his head."

"The younger boy, Sandiso, was asleep in bed, so Khumalo set the house alight and fled the scene.

"Both children died inside the house, the accused was arrested a few days later and confessed to the crimes."

Khumalo's also been sentenced to eight years for arson.

The sentences will run concurrently.
