Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Department of Correctional Services has roped in inmates from prisons around the country to help with flood relief efforts in KZN and the Eastern Cape.
The department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says, among other things, fresh produce from prison farms will be donated to communities that need them.
"Correctional Services has made available different packages in the form of food donations from our agricultural farms and production workshops. We are looking at items such as vegetables, eggs, pork and beef."

Nxumalo says offenders are encouraged to take part in meaningful activities under their rehabilitation programmes.
"(Correctional Services) is also in a position to provide other forms of assistance looking at infrastructural work which relates to building, construction, electrical work, tiling, painting, plumbing and other forms of labour that could be made possible by our artisans, offenders and parolees."
