KZN Education race against clock to repair damaged schools

With schools set to reopen next week, the KZN Department of Education is pushed for time as repairs to 147 KZN schools wrecked by violent storms continues.

On Thursday, Premier Sihle Zikalala and other government leaders visited the Harry Gwala District Municipality where heavy storms during the festive period left hundreds displaced.


Zikalala says the district is the most affected in the province with 15 schools left severely damaged.

The premier says rebuilding these schools is a top priority.


"Education is the number one priority for the ANC government. It is the most important weapon we can use to defeat the scourge of poverty and inequality in our society."


The premier says learners should be encouraged to take up subjects that will offer better employment opportunities in the future.


Zikalala revealed that studies show that some career paths contribute to the increasing number of unemployed graduates.

"To all those that are existing we wish them well, but we wish them as they enter institutions not to end to a growing number of unemployed graduates. 90% of unemployed graduates come from studies that relating to management and communication."
