Provincial Secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli told the media in Durban today that Gumede and her co-accused, Mondli Mthembu have been asked to step aside, as the party investigates the fraud and corruption charges against them.

Gumede appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court  last month on allegations of fraud and corruption linked to a multi-million Rand DSW tender dating back to 2016.

The Hawks say service providers were allegedly paid some R208-million, but the municipality did not receive anything in return.

Gumede was released on R50,000 bail.

eThekwini confirmed to Newswatch that the embattled mayor did not report for work yesterday.

Ntuli has also confirmed that Newcastle mayor, Ntuthuko Mahlaba has been put on a 30-day leave of absence pending murder charges against him.
