KZN activates winter plan as it gears up for cold snap

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance Thulasizwe Buthelezi says they are ready for the cold.

The department activated its winter plan in the wake of forecasters' extreme weather warnings.
" Our social partners are also ready to deploy relief to strategically identified high-risk areas, especially along major travel routes,” Buthelezi said.
"We're not merely responding to an immediate cold front, but our focus extends to the broader winter season encompassing all potential eventualities."
The South African Weather Service has warned that icy conditions are expected to sweep through eight provinces, including KZN, this weekend.
It is likely to usher in heavy rains, damaging winds and disruptive snowfall.
Buthelezi has reassured the province, saying they have a winter contingency plan in place.
He told reporters at a media briefing on Friday morning that it's built on five pillars, including early warning systems and proactive risk assessments.
"This proactive approach allows us to allocate resources and prepare interventions effectively. This is done through close collaboration with municipalities and various organisations. Through these efforts, we are able to reduce the risk in vulnerable areas through strategic interventions.
Meanwhile, Buthelezi said disaster teams will monitor all Comrades Marathon routes on Sunday.
