KwaMashu policeman due in court following botched kidnapping

A KwaMashu police officer is facing criminal charges following what appears to have been a kidnapping gone wrong at the weekend.

A source with knowledge of the arrest says another officer spotted the suspect and two others late on Friday afternoon.

The suspects allegedly attacked a woman and bundled her into a car in New Germany, outside Pinetown.

The officer jumped into his vehicle and sped after the suspects, who opened fire.

A gun battle ensued.

A well-known criminal identified as 'Sosage' was killed, another escaped into thick bush and the third, identified as a policeman, was arrested.

Police Search and Rescue were called out to recover 'Sosage's' body. While trying to flee he fell off a cliff. Search and Rescue dogs were used to locate his body.

SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident.

"It is alleged that on Friday at 5.30pm a 28-year-old woman was walking on Dinkelman Road when a silver Hyundai with three occupants stopped next to her. At gunpoint, the suspects forced her into the car and they robbed her of her cellphone," she said.

Gwala says the woman somehow managed to open one of the doors and exited the vehicle. She says the officer who intervened then chased to suspects to Clermont, where the dramatic shootout occurred.

The arrested suspect will appear in court today on charges of robbery and attempted murder.
