J&J jab more effective against Delta variant: SAMRC

The South African Medical Research Council's (SAMRC) Professor Glenda Gray says the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 jab is more effective against the Delta variant which is sweeping across the country.

"It gets better over time where both Delta and Beta variants of concerned, so this is very important. But what this slide shows you is that the immune response shows at the time and the vaccine get better with both the Delta and Beta virus over time," she said.

Gray was one of the experts who spoke at a Department of Health media briefing on Friday on the progress of government efforts in the fight against the pandemic. 


She said healthcare workers have been asking if the J&J vaccine needs to be boosted.


"The answer is no. We don't need to boost just yet. This slide shows the tests we do in individuals who are in clinical trials and this is taken from participants who either got one shot or two shots of the J&J vaccine."
