Jackie Shandu to apply for bail over 'racist' Phoenix comments

The leader of a lobby group that’s calling for justice for those killed in Phoenix will apply for bail on Friday.

Jackie Shandu appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with comments he made at a march last week, promoting violence against the Indian community.
The 37-year-old handed himself over at Durban Central Police on Monday.

"He appeared for Contravention of the Riotous Assemblies Act 17 of 1956, on two counts of incitement to commit public violence,” said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Kara.

"The matter was postponed to 6 August for bail consideration."
