Invest in hospitals and healthcare workers: Economist

A local economist feels government has missed the opportunity to re-invest in its own hospitals -- and South Africans are going to be the ones paying the cost.

That is the view of economist, Mike Schussler. He has been commenting on the country's National Health Insurance plans.

Officials are hopeful the NHI will be implemented by 2026.

Early estimates are that the NHI will cost some R250-billion to run, and South Africans will be expected to foot the bill through tax.

Schussler believes the money would have been better spent on the country's struggling public hospitals and healthcare workers.

"We are spending a lot of money and that is the problem. Government things it can spend its way out of trouble instead of managing its way out of trouble," said Schussler.

Schssuler feels it would be a better idea to consider bringing the private sector in to manage some of the country's public hospitals.

"We also need to do better quality checks and we probably need to address a lot of corruption in the hospitals," he continued.
