KZN Motor Racing is urging illegal drag racers to stay off public roads - and rather focus their energy on securing a formalised venue where they can race safely.

The organisation's chairperson, Kas Moodley, has been speaking after a video of a motorist being assaulted in Durban - allegedly by drag racers - went viral on social media last week.

33-year-old Kuben Pather was attacked at a garage along Umgeni Road, earlier this month. He'd apparently interrupted a drag race while taking his father's vehicle for a test drive.

Moodley says drag racing in Durban is too big to just go away.

"KZN Motor Racing is totally against illegal street racing. However, drag racing needs to be formalised - and we are looking to the City to provide the street racers with a venue where they can pursue their passion in a more safe and controlled manner," he said.

He feels it's mainly young motorists who get caught up in illegal street racing.

"I think the guys who have raced formally in the drags know the dangers of illegal street racing and what can happen. Because you're playing with some very powerful machines," he said.

His advice to illegal street racers is to keep off the streets, and to keep Durban safe. "Let's rally together and get a venue where we can really pursue our passion," he said.

Meanwhile, Sydenham SAPS are investigating a case of common assault - after Pather filed charges against his attackers.
