Kuben Pather of Umhlathuzana, south of Durban, was beaten at a petrol station on Umgeni Road last week - for allegedly getting in the way of the speedsters and interrupting the race.

The incident was captured on video and shared on social media.

Speaking to Newswatch,  Pather says he's grateful he survived the attack.

Recounting the incident, he says he skipped a red traffic light and drove onto the road the men were racing on - as it was late and he was trying to avoid being hijacked.

The 33-year-old small plant mechanic says he was approached by the racers when he stopped to purchase food at the petrol station.

He says his attackers looked very young.

Pather says none of the bystanders that can been seen in the video did anything to help him, except for one person who returned his wallet and phone to him.

He says he is now on heavy pain medication following the attack. He has since opened a case of assault at the Sydenham Police Station.
