The marchers are eThekwini municipal employees who say men need to protect women and children -- and call out perpetrators.

ANC chief whip Sibongiseni Mkhize received the group's memorandum of demands at the Durban City Hall.

Mkhize told the group they would like to see more men denouncing violence.

"Let us challenge other men to become good role models for young boys. Let us build strong family structures and show love to our partners and children," he said.

City Manager Sipho Nzuza says their message and efforts will go beyond today's march.

He says they are planning on reaching out to young men.

The march comes as violence against women and children continues to dominate the national discourse.

People from across the country are calling on government to take a greater stance against gender-based violence, including rape, murder and assault.
