Hundreds of Durban men to make a stand against GBV

Durban's city centre will come to a standstill at midday.

That is when hundreds of men are expected to march through the streets, taking a stand against gender-based violence.   

eThekwini's Msawakhe Mayisela says municipal staff members decided to stage the demonstration.

He says they feel they need to speak out and show their support for women and children.

"It will mainly be employees from eThekwini, we are all aware of a number of horrible incidents that have been happening in our country, so it is therefore incumbent on us as men to rise up and isolate men who abuse women and children and say, enough is enough," said Mayisela.

Marchers will make their way to the Durban City Hall from Centrum Parking near the Durban Exhibition Centre.

Meanwhile, violence against women and children will also have the attention of MPs.  

President Cyril Ramaphosa's called for a joint sitting in the National Assembly to discuss new ways of tackling gender-based violence.

"We are going to be addressing Parliament again and announce a number of measures that should be taken," said Ramaphosa.

"This is a national crisis."

Violence against women and children has dominated headlines across the country in recent weeks.

This after a number of violent attacks across the country, including here in KwaZulu-Natal.

In one of the most recent incidents, a south coast woman was found buried in a shallow grave in an informal settlement near Margate.

Thando Madlala was reported missing on Wednesday last week. Her body was found two days later.
