Homophobic lecturers saga: Student calls for justice

The KwaZulu-Natal Gay and Lesbian Community Health Centre says there have been three homophobic incidents that they've been made aware of in KZN - during this past week alone.

Bheka Khanyile

In one of the cases, a 21-year-old Durban man says he has been at the receiving end of homophobic comments by one of his lecturers, while another refused to teach him because of his sexual orientation at the Coastal KZN TVET College in Umlazi.

Bheka Khanyile says he felt humiliated by the alleged homophobic slurs, and has involved the centre and political parties to take up his case.

"I want them out of the school, and I want them to pay. I want to sue them because they actually humiliated me in front of other teachers and other students," he said.

The health centre's Sibongiseni Khumalo - who is working with Khanyile's case - says every time a new homophobic case arises, they are called to intervene.

"From Monday, there's still a case I'm investigating from Richmond - a Grade. 12 learner who was suspended from school for being a lesbian. And there's a guy in Hammarsdale who was chased from a radio station because he is gay," she said.

Since the incident, the college has confirmed that the two lecturers are being investigated.
