SA activists welcome anti-gay US pastor's ban
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Organisations supporting the LGBT community say Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba has made the right call on barring American pastor Steven Anderson.
The pastor from Faithful Word Baptist Church made headlines after commenting on the Orlando nightclub shooting which claimed the lives of 49 people.
"...there’s 50 less paedophiles in this world," he says in the footage.
Yesterday, Gigaba announced that the pastor would not be allowed into the country for promoting hate speech.
The Minister said Anderson who has also made disparaging comments about women and Muslims, cannot preach anything that's compatible with the constitution.
The KZN Gay and Lesbian Community Health Centre's Nonhlanhla Mkhize says its a big win for the LGBT community.
"For a country like South Africa that is deemed a democratic country and prides itself as a country that says we are about inclusivity, redressing the wrongs of the past and putting at the top of the list the concept of humanity and respect of dignity - anyone who wants to come into this country and look down on that would be a state that keeps [these people] off our shores, " she said.
