Embattled eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede has just left the building.

It is understood that Gumede and other senior eThekwini officials met the party's provincial leadership following a two-day PEC meeting at the Coastlands Hotel.

Rumours that Gumede has been axed have been doing the rounds on social media since last night.

An official announcement is expected this afternoon.

Senior eThekwini leadership, including Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer and Speaker, William Mpena, were seen entering the building earlier.

Msunduzi offciials, who also met provincial party leaders, have already finished their session. Msunduzi Mayor, Themba Njilo confirmed  to reporters outside the offices that the entire municipal executive has been redeployed. The troubled municipality has been placed under administration.

It is unclear if the eThekwini meeting developed along the same lines as Msunduzi's.

When exiting the building, Gumede did not entertain reporters' questioning. She climbed straight into a waiting vehicle and left immediately.

There is a strong police presence in the area.

Gumede was arrested in May in connection with what the Hawks believe was a dodgy multi-million Rand waste removal tender, dating back to 2016. She was released on R50,000 bail.
