Hijack victim tells of hospital horror

The KZN Department of Health says it's investigating a complaint by a Pinetown resident - whose right arm was slashed in an attempted hijacking, last month.

Riaan van der Westhuizen claims hospital staff at RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth, south of Durban, left his wound open and unattended in the casualty ward for hours - before his heart stopped.
He says he was left for dead - until a doctor intervened.

"They left me in casualty for about two-and-a-half hours, leaving me to bleed to death. The first time I died, my fiance' started resuscitating me. A doctor saw that, he intervened, he got me resuscitated," he said.
Van der Westhuizen alleges that his complaints for proper care from hospital staff - have fallen on deaf ears.

"I've just been laying here whenever they clean the wound, they open it, they expose it - leaving it open for five to six hours," he said.
