The two officers were disarmed and killed while carrying out their protection duties at ward councillor, Sthe Zulu's home in Bhambayi.

Zulu, who has reportedly been receiving protection for about a year, has told the Mercury that his life had been threatened and believes there's a political motive.

But KZN Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo says the motive hasn't yet been established.

"At this stage, we can't say what is the motive of the killing. The motive for the killing is not known - until we apprehend the suspects that were involved. Maybe that will shed light on what the motive really is."
