Grace period for expired driver's licences extended - Mbalula

The Transport Department has extended the grace period for motorists whose driver's licences expired during the Covid-19 lockdown.

An extension has been granted to mid-April.
This applies to those whose cards expired between the 26th of March 2020 and the 31st of August 2021.
The deadline was previously set for the end of March this year.

Briefing the media on Friday morning, Minister Fikile Mbalula said they have decided to extend the grace period following calls from various groups.
"We urge all those who are yet to renew their driving licences not to delay any further and take advantage of the additional capacity we have provided and the online services.
"Those who apply for renewal of their driving licence cards before the expiry date are permitted to use the expired cards for a period of three months provided that they have in their possession the expired card and the receipt in the vehicle at all times."
