OUTA repeats call for govt to extend deadline for expired driver's licences
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
OUTA is calling on the Transport Department to extend the deadline for renewing expired driver's licences or stop issuing fines.
Thursday is the last day for motorists to renew licences that expired during lockdown.
The department has been sitting with a backlog of nearly 600 000 applications, exacerbated by the coronavirus restrictions and the card printing machine breaking down last year.
OUTA estimates that over one million motorists will be sitting with expired licences next month.

The organisation's Advocate Stefanie Fick says an extension must be granted.
"OUTA proposes that law enforcement agencies be instructed to not issue fines for motorists whose driver licences cards have expired in the past 12 months as this may lead to unlawful enforcement.
"The public's inability to comply with the regulations is largely due to the department's incompetence and the public shouldn't be punished for this."
