Insurers can't automatically reject claims over expired driver's licence - SAIA
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) says car insurance claims won't automatically be rejected due to expired driving licences.
It's been allaying the anxiety of many motorists who might not make Thursday's deadline to renew licences whose validity ended during lockdown.
The Department of Transport had granted a grace period which has now come to an end.
The AA and OUTA have called on the minister to extend the deadline further, saying tens of thousands of drivers will still be sitting wit expired licences after today due to a number of factors.

"Drivers can take comfort in the fact that an insurer will not automatically reject a claim where a licence has expired for reasons beyond their control," says Zakes Sondiyazi, who is a risk manager at the insurance association.
"This matter is particularly relevant when there are backlogs or delays in getting appointments at driver licence testing centres."
Motorists who have not been able to renew their driver's licences due to unforeseen circumstance are advised to inform their insurer.
