Former KZN MEC wants case against him expedited

The former MEC for Economic Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Mike Mabuyakhulu wants the criminal case against him expedited.

Mabuyakhulu and 15 other business people, their companies and politicians are facing a raft of charges relating to the R28-million the provincial government spent for a music concert in 2012 that never materialised.

The money, the State argues, ended up in the pockets of the accused.

The case came before the Commercial Crimes Court again today.

Mabuyakhulu is now being represented by advocate Jimmy Howse.

Howse told the court that his client is only facing six of the 77 charges referred to in the charge sheet. He says these only relate to around R300,000, compared to the total amount of about R28-million.

Howse says the case is beginning to look like it is going to drag on and, as a politician, Mabuyakhulu is being negatively impacted.

He asked the the State respond to a request for further particulars speedily so they can make representations to have the charges separated and Mabuyakhulu's case expedited.

The court agreed and ordered the State to have done so by the next appearance.

Proceedings have been adjourned until October.
