Durban Metro Police say the multi-operational response team and public order officers were called to the area this morning.

They sealed off points of entry to the M19 - the road linking Durban and Pinetown - after a night of unrest.

Armoured vehicles were then used to open the roadway. Five protestors were arrested.

Violent demonstrations put the brakes on travel for motorists at the weekend and forced the popular aQuelle Tour Durban cycling event to change one of its race routes to ensure the safety of participants.

Metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad says hundreds of residents from the Quarry Road informal settlement are demanding land after their homes were washed away in last week's storm.

"They apparently said their homes had washed away and they needed higher ground property."
