Five people have been killed and another person left critically injured after a crash on the R71 in Limpopo this morning.

Emergency services say a bakkie and car collided on the road between Haenertsburg and Moria at around 7am.


Both vehicles sustained a large amount of damage in the collision.

ER24 says the five occupants of the car, two women and three men, sustained multiple injuries and showed no signs of life.

Three people were found lying inside the vehicle, while a fourth person lay a few metres away. The fifth person was found lying underneath the vehicle.

"Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead on the scene," said spokesperson Russel Meiring.

The driver of the bakkie sustained several injuries and was found to be in a critical condition.

Meiring says she was treated on scene by advanced life support paramedics before being transported to a medical facility in Tzaneen for further care.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Meiring says the relevant authorities were on scene.
