eThekwini condemns land invasions

eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede has condemned recent incidents of violence, illegal land invasions and damage to municipal property in parts of the city.

Speaking at an executive meeting, Gumede said there have been a spate of illegal land invasions in recent months.

The mayor is calling on all residents to desist from carrying out land invasions.

She says building on land without permission is not only illegal but also disrupts the municipality's programmes, as the land might be earmarked for further infrastructure development projects.

The mayor says some land, such as nature reserves, is also not meant for human occupation, as it is part of the City's greening strategy aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change.

Gumede is urging people to exercise patience while the municipality identifies suitable land and funding to build low cost housing.

She says everyone needs to work together to ensure Durban becomes the most liveable and caring city.
