In one of the latest incidents in the Durban area, since government announced plans to expropriate land without compensation, some residents of an informal settlement in Umlazi moved onto land in Silverglen, south of the city.

They claim the land has been left unoccupied for years and their current area is overcrowded.

The municipality's Mandla Nsele says they have had to call in law enforcement. He says the land is now being watched by police and they have turned to the courts to prevent further invasions.

"We have also engaged the legal unit to facilitate the granting of a court order to prevent any further illegal invasions on the site", he said.

"Once the court interdict has been granted those found to be in breach of the court order will be arrested and criminally charged", Nsele said.
