eThekwini assures service delivery on election day

eThekwini Municipality says there will be no disruptions to municipal services on Election Day next week. 

eThekwini Municipality has launched an investigation following claims that the City forked out R579m for a two-year contract to fix and maintain street lights across the metro.

City spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says teams have been placed on high alert.

"The municipality is working closely with the South African Police Service to maintain peace and order around voting stations on the day. There are measures in place to service areas with intermittent water supply. Water containers and static tanks have been sourced for voting stations in areas with water challenges.

“The first consignment of water containers has been delivered to the IEC warehouse. Water tankers will be allocated in the five regions across the municipality to supply water to voting stations and surrounding communities at regular intervals. 

"Repairs of gravel roads leading to voting stations are complete. An assessment will be conducted should there be heavy rains before the elections."

Sisilana says generators have been sourced to avoid unplanned power outages in areas near voting stations. 

She says repairs on streetlights in areas that are located near voting stations have also begun.
