"We will certainly act swiftly once contacted authorities have completed their investigations. We understand investigations by the police continue around this matter."

Madonsela was shot yesterday during what university management says was a scuffle with officers from Excellence Security.

He died later in hospital.

Briefing the media in this afternoon, Mthembu said he was deeply sorry for Mandonsela’s death.

He reiterated the university condemns the use of live ammunition on its students.

"It's so happened yesterday that because of not having enough people who are well-trained, for example members of the public order police, everybody was called in to help with the difficult situation we're facing. We had not expected that the security officers responsible for parameter guarding would also find themselves involved," he said.

He says most of the security personnel at the university don't carry guns.

Meanwhile a delegation from the university is on its way to northern KZN - to visit Madonsela's family.

Mthembu says the team left once they received confirmation of who the student killed was.

"The team from our student services to also make an assessment of the circumstances of the family and what type of support might be given to the family during this time. We hope by the end of the day, they will come back with a report for the university to make an assessment on the level of support we could provide to the family," Mthembu said.
