DUT students march to demand improved security on campus
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) say they are appalled by some comments describing their march for justice as a violent protest.
"We are not hooligans. We are just calling for peace, and we are calling for justice, " says Sandiso Buthelezi, who serves on a committee calling for justice for Mlungisi Madonsela.
The 20-year-old Madonsela, who was a Business Administration student, was shot during an alleged scuffle with private security guards following a protest outside the Steve Biko campus in 2019.

He died in hospital.
Management at the Durban University of Technology has closed the Steve Biko, Ritson and ML Sultan campuses on Friday.
It says planned gatherings in the past have turned violent which is why it wants to ensure the safety and security of staff and students.
"We don't want a case where we fight fire with fire. We are saying listen to our grievances.

“We have lost a student here. We are having just a peaceful march to hand over the memorandum. The university must do an inquest to the Durban High Court for the case to go to court because it's been three years and the case has never gone to court," says Buthelezi.
Marchers will make their way from Curries Fountain to the Steve Biko Campus on Friday.
