Durban rock-throwing: Police take two into custody

Metro police in eThekwini say two people are in custody on suspicion of being involved in some of the rock-throwing incidents that have reported in and around Durban.

The men were allegedly found in possession of a boulder while walking along a pedestrian bridge on the N2 between Nandi Drive and Inanda Road in the city.

Metro police spokesperson, Parbhoo Sewpersadh says they were spotted by members yesterday and taken to the Greenwood Park police station. The two men are appearing in the Durban Magistrate's Court today. 

"Two males were arrested on a pedestrian bridge between Nandi Drive and Inanda Road on the N2 yesterday afternoon. One was in possession of a boulder. They were arrested and taken to Greenwood Park police station. They were found close to a pedestrian bridge," Sewpersadh says.

There have been fatalities as a result of the rock-throwing. 

Late last month, Amina Haffejee and her seven-year-old brother, Abdur Raheem were killed when a boulder was thrown onto their car from a bridge on the N2 in Ballito.

There have been several other incidents of rock-throwing, with the latest happening at Durban's Toll Gate bridge yesterday morning. The motorist escaped unharmed.
