Deputy mayor, Fawzia Peer says officials are trying to crack down on attacks and prevent further vehicle accidents.

Peer says the move forms part of the the municipality's short-term plan.

Long-term plans that are still being discussed include installing steel cages over bridges.

"We have had a number of meetings with task teams and the province and national bodies like SANRAL on this matter. We are ensuring that with short-term plans we will have maximum patrols on the N2 between Tongaat and Ballito," said Peer.

The deputy mayor says the municipality will also look to ensure there is enough lighting in hotspot areas.

Several rock throwing incidents have been reported in the Greater Durban area recently, with people allegedly throwing rocks or boulders from bridges onto passing vehicles.

Two siblings were killed when a boulder smashed into the vehicle they had been travelling in on the N2 near Ballito over the festive season.
