Durban Metro Cop stable following M25 protest shooting

The Durban Metro Police officer who was shot during a protest near Phoenix, north of Durban this morning is in a stable condition.

Metro Police spokesperson, Parbhoo Sewpersadh says the 30-year-old officer was shot in the leg.

He and his colleagues had gone to intervene after protesting residents placed burning tyres on the M25 in Bhambayi.

The protestors also allegedly threw stones at passing vehicles.

Sewpersadh says the shooting is being investigated.

"Other Metro Police members were also injured in the process. Debris was thrown at them by the protestors,"  he said.

It is still unknown where the bullet that struck the officer was fired from.

"It seems it came from the informal settlement, by protestors."
 

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate was on scene to investigate the incident.

SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwane said a case of public violence and attempted murder was being investigated by Inanda police.
