PHOTOS: Truck torched in Mtubatuba protest, owners speak

The owners of one of the trucks torched during this morning's violent protest near Mtubatuba on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast say they have been left heartbroken.

Isabella Lourens and her husband Johan, from the Mpumalanga-based company JTL Vervoer, raced to the scene of the demonstration after receiving a call from their driver early this morning.

The driver had been forced to abandon the vehicle, fearing for his life.

Police say around 250 protestors blocked the N2 near Zamimpilo at about 5.30am. Officers also confirmed that two trucks were torched and some other vehicles stoned.

Community members, demanding better service delivery, also allegedly looted heavy goods vehicles.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says two cases of malicious damage to property will be opened at KwaMasane SAPS for further investigation.

Isabella Lourens has described seeing the burnt out remains of their vehicle. She has told Newswatch that what they saw has left them heartbroken:

Officers say calm has since been restored to the area.
