Durban cop killed outside his home

A police officer has been gunned down outside his home in Phoenix, north of Durban but not before shooting and killing the armed suspect.

The SAPS says the Warrant Officer who lived at Alfawood Place in the Woodview area was about to leave for work at the Phoenix Police Station on Sunday when the gunman got out of a white car and opened fire on him.

Police say despite being shot several times, the officer managed to return fire, killing the suspect on the scene. 


The policeman, however, also died outside his home and those inside the vehicle sped away. 


The motive for the attack is yet to be established.


The office of the National Commissioner is appealing for any information from witnesses saying that the 72-hour Activation Plan has been mobilised to track down the suspects.

The Acting National Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola said: "We, the police management, have made a clarion call to all our police officers never to fall with a gun in their hands. Our colleague fought a brave fight today, but sadly he lost his life, but not without ensuring that his assailant went down too",
