Durban children’s home: Rebuilding unlikely to happen soon
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Management
at the Edith Benson Babies Home in Durban's Sherwood area say they now face
rebuilding the facility after it was destroyed by fire earlier this week.

The home
had been caring for more than 50 children when a fire tore through the building
earlier this week.
Kerusha
Govender, who is a board member with the home, says rebuilding is unlikely to
happen in the near future.
“The
entire building was not burnt, so there is a good chance we will rebuild,” she
said.

Govender
says there are a lot of investigations and fundraising that would need to be
completed before going ahead with any possible rebuild.
“We are
not sure what caused the fire. It’s not a very new building, so there is the
possibility that it could have been something electrical, but that is all pure
speculation,” she said.
Authorities
are investigating what sparked the blaze on Tuesday night.
All of
the children were evacuated from the building safely.
Emergency services who responded to the scene say one person was treated for smoke inhalation.
