Some 57 children from the ages of 3-months to 6-years were evacuated safely from the Sherwood home on Tuesday night.

The police's Thembeka Mbhele says experts are trying to establish what sparked the blaze.

"For now, the cause of the fire is still unknown and being investigated," said Mbhele.

The children are now being cared for by four separate facilities in eThekwini.

Neighbours told Newswatch they alerted firefighters as soon as they saw the flames.

Community groups and businesses from across the region rallied together to help the children by donating clothes, baby formula and nappies, among other items.
