Four-year-old boy a hero in Durban Children's Home fire
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
It was the curiosity of a four-year-old boy that saved nearly 60 children at the Edith Benson Children's home in Durban - which was gutted by a fire on Tuesday.
Board member of the home, Kerusha Govender says the little boy alerted one of the volunteers who immediately started getting the children out.
"Their hearts were in their throats. You train for this and it can't prepare you for the day it's happening. You really need to get 55 kids out of there and some them are babies. It's not an easy task. The whole board is grateful - it's just saving grace," Govender says.

Govender says the kids are alright.
"Even at the sight of smoke - the children had started the evacuation and they were evacuated to a place where they did not witness the site of the building burning. That evening and the next morning we relocated them. They were all in good spirits and relocated with the kids they are normally in a unit with," she says.
Govender has thanked everyone who has helped the children following the fire.
